Harvey Milk

Harvey Milk was a very interesting man. His life took turn after turn till his untimely assassination on November 27, 1978. He spent 11 months on San Fransisco's board of supervisors, and pushed for gay rights. This was not his only topic as he also wanted less governmental hand in peoples private sexual matters and for the legalization of marijuana. As his time as Mayor of the Castro District he was asked to give assistance to Gay bars, and instead of saying yes or no Milk in turn looked a different way; and tried to get more gay drivers as well as helping the gay bars. With his attempt stumped he told the bars to stop selling beer. The Boycott was successful.

Reason: Milk had many reasons to push for gay rights, but most importantly of all Milk himself was gay! Early in his life he helped build the first synagogue in Woodmere New York on Long island where he was born. Milk was brought up Jewish and his father was a owner of a local popular department store. Though when he graduated high School he was not even considered as a queer actually moreover a Man's man. After college he joined the United states Navy. After being discharged from the Navy he started a 'gay' relationship with Joe Campbell. This lasted six years and still Milk didn't know he was destined for a career in politics, and at the moment in his life he was a school teacher. Once he entered politics later in his life he was all for helping others just like himself as he had been rejected from five jobs because he had exposed the fact that he was a homosexual, and didn't want the same mistreatment to happen to others like him.

Occupation: Milk was very much a freelancer as he had done many jobs over the short years of his life. He started off helping his dad in his department store, then moved on the become a successful Lieutenant in the Navy. After being discharged became a school teacher in George W. Hewellt High School on Long Island. His time there not lasting long he became a Insurance agent, but did not like the job and moved to be a researcher of wall street for a company called Bache & Company. During all these moves he had many small relationships with much younger men and one six year relationship with Joe Campbell. After his wandering led him to San Fransisco he became an adamant politician for gay rights ,and at the time of his assassination was Mayor of Castro District.

Harvey Milk looked up to a great deal of people probably Muhammid Ali the most as he admired his drive to be the best a drive that Harvey himself said he had. “More people have been slaughtered in the name of religion than for any other single reason. That, my friends, that is true perversion.” was a quote from Harvey that he believed in whole heartedly. He ,unfortunatly for his short life, didn't make any close freinds except for his relationships which normaly didn't last more then a year or a couple months.
